Mentions vs citations
A brand name, a link and a cited source provide different evidence. Follow the answer back to the page before drawing conclusions.
A citation is a starting point for verification. Read the passage and its surrounding context.
Name the evidence
A mention means a name appears in the answer. A link points to a destination. A confirmed citation is tied to the provider’s citation annotations. A retrieved result can exist without being cited. PromptFace preserves these distinctions rather than treating every URL as proof of use.
Start an audit by classifying the evidence you actually have. If citation annotations are missing, leave that uncertainty visible instead of upgrading an ordinary link into a citation.
Check the source
OpenAI advises opening cited pages to check whether they support an answer. Search results and citations can contain errors or be outdated. Source: OpenAI Help Center.
- Identify the claim the citation is attached to.
- Read the relevant passage and nearby qualifications.
- Check the page’s date, author and subject.
- Note whether the page supports, limits or contradicts the claim.
Preserve the context
An isolated sentence can lose an important condition. A pricing claim may apply only to annual contracts; an integration may be available only on a higher plan. Save enough context to revisit the interpretation.
PromptFace fetches source pages and stores the available full text with a separate capture time. This is the page as captured, not a guarantee of the exact version seen by the model. Fetch failures and unavailable content must remain visible in your analysis.
Track text as well as URLs
The same text can appear at several URLs. PromptFace’s content-based sourceId connects identical saved text; changed text receives a different identity. Use it alongside the URL and capture date to distinguish a new destination from a new document version.
Finish the audit with a short evidence note: what the answer claims, what the saved page supports and what remains uncertain. A list of source domains alone cannot answer those questions.
Follow the question, answer and sources in one record.
